Quarantine, 2020. From the original series photographs.

Quarantine records the beginning of Joe Taveras’s painting practice in Los Angeles in March 2020. After realizing he would be staying in the city during the first weeks of the pandemic, he gathered art supplies and began to work.

The series moves between portraits, figure paintings, abstract studies, and drawings. Scream, Outbreak, Her, Nature, Singularity, and The Wall appear among the early works. Photographs of their making preserve the directness and variety of that first period.

Beginning with experiment

These images show a painter trying different materials, subjects, and visual approaches in quick succession. The series offers a starting point for following the later shifts toward fragmented figures, layered color, and larger compositions.
