Spectators, 2020. From the original series photographs.

Spectators followed the first Quarantine paintings in Los Angeles. Created between April and May 2020, the series includes Shatter, Shock, Rona, Unmasked, Arrogance, Birdhouse, The Eye, and Watch.

The original photographs show paintings accumulating around the artist as the work moved toward a more fragmented visual language. Eyes, faces, and angular forms recur across the series.

Looking outward

The accompanying studio images place the paintings within the daily life of lockdown: work spread outside, canvases hung around a room, and paintings seen beside one another. They give the series a setting as well as a sequence.
