Summer 23 grew out of three months of concentrated painting and study at the Atelier. Taveras’s August 2023 release describes a prolific period shaped by self-exploration, religion, quantum physics, and mythology. These were subjects of the artist’s inquiry and imagination, giving the paintings a varied conceptual vocabulary.
The series moves between broad, densely worked compositions and more compact paintings. The original series writing connects Oceanside with the coast, Jazz with listening to live music, and Mondrian Study with the artist’s study of Piet Mondrian. Each work opens a different point of entry into the same period of practice.
Inside the Atelier
The Atelier occupied a previously unused building with ten rooms. Painting, sculpture, music, study, and the practical work of the studio took place alongside one another. Taveras’s original account describes beginning the day with administration and goals before moving through the building to make work.
